Bryan and I went to California to Disneyland/California Adventure for our 23rd anniversary. We drove down on Monday afternoon and ate dinner at Bubba Gumps. It was good food and I knew all the trivia the waiter asked us.
Tuesday morning we woke up and played the crazy game to get tickets to the new Star Wars ride. You can only ride "Rise of the Resistance" through a virtual queue. The way you get the ticket (or get in the virtual queue) is extremely stressful!! You use the Disneyland app to get in line. At 7 am, they release tickets and they are gone within a few minutes. So you get on your phone, with your tickets all linked, at 6:55 am and then you refresh at exactly 7 am, press "Virtual Queue" and hope that you were quick enough to get a virtual spot in line. Luckily, it worked for us and we had a space in the late morning. If you miss the window, they open another window at noon and you can try then, but it is crazy stressful.
We ate a quick breakfast of stuff we had brought with us and then we rode the bus to Disneyland. We didn't know how the bus system would work yet so we were late getting out to get on. That meant that we missed the crowds waiting to enter Disneyland but we still got there close to opening.
We had already linked our tickets and had them on the app so we got in without a problem. We weren't in too big of a hurry but I did want to run to the Haunted Mansion first thing because the line had been the longest (I had been watching on the app for a couple of weeks beforehand).
After that, we went on the usual rides and actually had really good timing. I would watch the app for the lines that were the shortest and then we would ride on those. We went on everything we wanted, multiple times and had a great time. We got the usual Disney treats (churro and stuff).
When it was time for our virtual queue we went to the ride and my phone chimed that it was our turn to board. It was really slick and the line wasn't long at all. And the ride was AMAZING!! We were so sad that we only got to ride on it once (we actually tried to get a virtual queue time again at noon but they are too smart for us to beat the system). The ride was one that was both an in-person experience and a virtual one. I was quite nervous when faced with Stormtroopers and other Star Wars bad guys. And I realized just how horrible I am at taking selfies.
In my defense (as Courtney would say), I was being rushed through, the Storm Troopers were MOVING, and I was a little nervous about all the Star Wars bad guys around me. It was a really cool ride.
By the time it was night, we were tired and ready to go. We took the bus to PF Changs for dinner and then back to the hotel.
Wednesday morning we were set to go to California Adventure. This was another stressful morning for a virtual queue. There was a virtual queue for the new "Spiderman" ride. So, once again, we had to get on the app early and try to get in a virtual line. It worked so I was excited.
We rode the bus to Disneyland and went to California Adventure. This time we were there earlier so we had to wait with the crowd before they dropped the tape and let us in. This was a hilarious time. I would work my way up and then Bryan would follow me. Since there are strollers, there are natural pockets of dead space where you can just fill in. By going from dead space to dead space, you can make your way closer to the front. The goal was to get to Radiator Racers because that line is FOREVER long during the day. We watched a newlywed couple as the husband explained to the wife that she was going to have to run and hold on to his shirt so they didn't get separated. Well, when the line began moving he left her in the dust and she was not happy about it. They finally met up and were in front of us in line but I think she was still peeved with him. It was so funny to watch.
We got on Radiator Racers without much of a line and then we went all over and rode what we wanted. Bryan isn't great with virtual rides so we went to ride the Incredicoaster, which is what California Screaming used to be. It was long and had a lot of loops. By the time we got off, both of us were feeling it. We then went on Toy Story and spent the rest of the day going around to the different rides we wanted in California Adventure.
I went on the new (well, to me) Guardians of the Galaxy ride. It is where the Tower of Terror was. It was a long line but I was a single rider so it went faster than it did for groups. It was a fun ride but I didn't need to ride it more than once. We spent the rest of the time at the Avengers Compound watching the various shows with the superheroes. That was pretty fun.
We went on the Spiderman ride. I thought it was fun but Bryan wasn't too much of a fan. The line, even with the virtual queue, was really long and one of the cars malfunctioned so we were in line for a long time for the ride. That may have figured into making it not as fun as it may have been otherwise.
When we had gone on all the rides we wanted to, we bought our traditional loaf of sourdough bread and then went back to the hotel. We ate at the Cheesecake Factory that night.
Thursday morning we got up, packed up, checked out, and drove home. We stopped in Vegas long enough to get Courtney a piece of Cheesecake Factory cheesecake as a treat. I think she was happier to see the cheesecake than she was to see me.
Courtney did great being on her own for those days. Grandpa Oman took her to dinner one night and she called or Facetimed us a few times each day. But I think she was happy to see us when we got home.
