Today Courtney had her first soccer practice of the new season. She was super excited! There was a bit of a mess up when the teams were formed and Bryan was made the coach of a team and Courtney was put on a different team. We had the choice of moving Courtney to the team Bryan was coaching or having Bryan quit coaching the team and leave Courtney where she was. We decided to have Courtney moved to Bryan's team so he wouldn't leave one without a coach.
Because of the registration date Courtney missed the deadline by a few weeks and so she is playing in the same league as last year but she is the oldest. She's pretty excited.
We are a bit out of practice with the soccer practice thing. I filled the thermos with ice and water...then left it on the counter when we went to the park for practice. I thought I fed the kids....but now we are all eating pancakes for dinner at 8 p.m. So we need to get with the program, but she is loving being a "soccer girl" for another season.

SEPs
The kids had their SEPs tonight so we met with their teachers to find out how they are doing at the start of the year.
Ethan is reading way above his grade (which we knew) and he is where he needs to be for math. We have been worried about his math because they take timed tests and he freezes on them. Bryan has been working with him to help out but he still doesn't have things memorized. He learned "touch math" where they learn to count to add. I don't like the system because then they always have a "crutch" of counting instead of knowing the addition facts from memory. But his teacher isn't worried because he knows his facts.
Courtney is also doing well. She is right on grade for her reading and is a great girl (doesn't talk or disrupt). We don't have concerns with her because things are just starting but she is loving school.
Good job kids!!!

Target
Target...my kids favorite store! They both had some money/gift cards to use from the work party on Friday night and from birthday/chores/allowance. So we went there on Saturday afternoon. I took Courtney to the toys while Bryan took Ethan to electronics. Courtney chose 3 Webkinz pets (they are stuffed animals that you can register on-line and then play with on the computer, although she only registered them and couldn't figure out how to play with them) and Ethan bought 2 Wii games...one was Pacman!
It was fun to help them pick things out and watch them pay for the toys themselves.

Work Party
Friday night was the annual Barney, McKenna & Olmstead Summer Family Party at Veyo Pool. The kids LOVE these parties and always look forward to going to them. They always follow the same format: crawdad catching for awards, swimming, food, BINGO (the reason my kids love it so much), more swimming, ice cream and then home.
Courtney didn't want to catch a crawdad this year (can't say that I blame her any) so she and I went swimming while the boys caught crawdads. Ethan had a unique approach this year...he got right in the water and walked around trying to catch one. It worked! He caught one all on his own and it was a big one. He got the award for the "Scariest Crawdad." There were some really huge crawdads that he saw crawling in the middle of the stream. I can't believe he didn't get pinched!
We all ate dinner, which was catered by Cafe Rio. It was good food. Then it was time to play BINGO. This is a tradition and one that the kids LOVE!! They have a table set up with all kinds of games, toys and gift cards. When you get BINGO you can pick something from the table. Everything has a gift receipt so you can take it back if you change your mind. In years past we have gotten a blow-up trampoline, gerbil (which we didn't keep), Polly Pockets, race cars, and all kinds of toys. This year Ethan got a $15 gift card to Target and Courtney got a soccer ball (which we traded in on Saturday at Target when she changed her mind). It was a fun game.
After eating ice cream, the kids went swimming until we started to see lightening in the sky and they got out. We were home pretty early, compared to years past. But the kids had a great time and can't wait for next year.

2 Hours
That's how long it took after I posted the loft bed frame on craigslist before I got a call and sold it. Amazing!!! The woman drove down from Cedar City to buy the bed.
It was a good bed and I'm sad that our ceiling fans get in the way but it's nice to have the money back from it. Now...what else can I sell???
Courtney's New Room
Courtney's loft bed was just too big for the bedroom. We couldn't have her fan on because the bed was so high that it was dangerous, so her room was really hot during the summer. Finally, we decided that it had to go and we had to get her a little bed.
We had a twin bed frame in the basement, I found a twin mattress set for $25 on craigslist and our neighbor sold us her daughter's old bed set for $20. We were set! Courtney and I got the room as ready as we could before Bryan got home from work on Friday. Then on Saturday morning we took pictures of the loft bed frame so we could sell it before we took it apart and put it in the garage.
Courtney is so happy about her new room. I need to fix the curtains that came with the bed set, but that won't be for a couple of weeks when I get the time. I like how her twin bed fits in the room so much better and, Courtney says, it give her more room to dance!

Tooth Fairy Again!
Ethan is obsessed with pulling teeth and I have been, frankly, a bit concerned about it. During Kung Fu Panda 2 he pulled a tooth. He pulled Courtney's first tooth last week and now...
He kept telling me that he had a tooth loose but I couldn't feel it and he said it was a molar. I didn't think those came out so I kind of just ignored him thinking that he was just obsessed with pulling another tooth. I was blogging and he came into the kitchen and said, "Really Mom, my tooth is loose." I felt it but it didn't feel like it to me.
About 5 minutes later he came back into the kitchen and said, "Well, it's out." I looked over to see him holding a tooth in his hand and one of my best kitchen dish towels in his mouth with the other hand (he had to stop the bleeding somehow, right?).
I freaked out. First off, I didn't think kids lost their molars. I am at a huge disadvantage when it comes to teeth coming out because, right before I got braces, the oral surgeon pulled 10 of my teeth. So I didn't go through the teeth-loosing stages like everyone else did. Secondly, he pulled another tooth. Can't he leave those things where they belong?!?!
I immediately called our neighbor, who is a dental hygienist, but she wasn't home and she didn't answer her cell phone. So I tried our other neighbor, who is also a dental hygienist, but she didn't answer either. So I called my friend around the corner who has 4 kids. She told me that it was perfectly normal but that she wanted to see. So we walked over there and she said that it was a baby molar (who knew they came in baby size?!) and that he was perfectly fine.
Now Courtney tells me that she has another tooth loose. Will this never end? Hahaha. Good thing we have a pediatric dental appointment next week.

Walk Like a Man!
Last November we had to get Ethan some stability shoes. He had a pronation that was pretty bad and so we needed something that wouldn't let his feet turn in. My friend, who is a physical therapist, recommended that we go to a local sporting goods store, so we tried it out.
When they measured Ethan's feet, he was too small for the men's shoes so they found the most "boy looking" woman's shoe they could and ordered it in a 5 1/2 for him. Yes, at 8 years old his feet were the same as a woman's 5 1/2! They have been great shoes but now they are too small. So I took him to the same store to get another pair.
The man measured him and said that he was a woman's 6 1/2 to 7 now but when Ethan tried on that sized shoe it wouldn't fit. The man brought out a woman's size 8 (I'm an 8 1/2) and it fit perfectly but... a woman's size 8 equates to a man's 5 1/2. So now Ethan can wear men's shoes!! He was super excited. (The man helping us just laughed at Ethan's reaction.)
So this opened up so many more possibilities. Did you know that most women's running shoes have purple, pink or baby blue on them? Yup. Ethan was pretty limited before but now he has all kinds of blue, green and black shoes to choose from. He picked out the same shoe he has been wearing but it has lime green on it and he is super happy. They ordered them and now we just have to wait a week.
I tried to joke with Ethan and tell him that we can now share shoes but he doesn't seem to think that's funny. ;)

1st Day of School!!
Today was the first day of school. Courtney is in 1st grade and Ethan is in 4th. They were nervous but excited to begin a new school year. The bus stop has switched to across the street from our house so that threw them off a bit, but it wasn't bad.
After the bus left, I took Courtney's birthday cupcakes to the school to be handed out at lunch time. I got to hang out with Courtney and say "hi" to Ethan before the bell rang. They were pretty nervous that they would be late so they stuck by their classroom doors, but it went well.
The moms in the neighborhood always get together for breakfast on the first day of school to decompress after the summer. I haven't ever gone because I had Courtney with me and then last year it was crazy on the first day. But this year I went and it was a lot of fun to sit around talking for a while.
I have had a bit of a mental adjustment to make. I loaded my errands into the van to do after breakfast and I kept thinking "Oh, I won't have time to get that done." But then I realized, "Yes I do because I have all afternoon free!" It was nice. I have a whole list of things around the house that I don't get to in the mornings before Courtney would get home from Kindergarten. Now I have to prioritize and start getting them done.
I met them after school with popsicles for everyone who rode the bus and they liked that. All they will say about school is that it was fun. Hopefully they will share more as the night goes on but they both seemed to have a lot of fun!

Red Pig
Courtney has wanted a fish for a while but we just haven't gotten around to getting her one. A couple of weeks ago she was asked to "fish sit" for a friend. It was a fun opportunity to see how she would do with her own beta fish. She did awesome and always fed it on time. So we thought it would be fun to get her one for her birthday.
We bought the fish bowl, gravel, plants, and castle. My parents took her beta fish shopping today. She chose a red one that is beautiful. Ethan's beta is called Blue Pig, because he eats a lot. So Courtney named her fish Red Pig.

"Prince Eric Said My Name!!!"
Our Bishop is CEO of Tuacahn. We were taking Courtney to "The Little Mermaid" for her birthday at Tuacahn so I sent a text to Bishop asking if they ever do shout-outs to people having birthdays. He sent a message back saying "not generally but I'll ask."
We were all sitting together and the man came out at the beginning to welcome everyone. He made 3 birthday announcements, 1 anniversary congratulations and 1 family reunion welcome. But nothing for Courtney. I figured that the shout-outs were probably for people who gave money to Tuacahn or something. I was glad I hadn't told Courtney about it.
At intermission, Rebecca (the Bishop's wife who also is a House Manager at Tuacahn) came up to me and said that the man forgot to announce Courtney's birthday so she and Bishop had it arranged with the actor playing Prince Eric to say Courtney's name during the song "Kiss the Girl." I was so excited. That is much better than a birthday wish at the beginning!
When the play began again we were watching closely. When Prince Eric and Arial are on the boat in the lake and he is trying to guess her name he guessed two names and then said, "I know, your name is Courtney." We all looked at Courtney and she was so excited!! "Prince Eric said my name, Mom!!" The show was awesome too!
Afterward I saw Rebecca and thanked her for arranging it and she told us to get in line so we could meet the actor and say thanks, but Courtney was too shy and didn't want to do it. But I am so thankful for nice people who went out of their way to make Courtney feel special. This is one birthday she won't forget!

Birthday Morning
She is 6 years old!!! She choose for her birthday breakfast crepes filled with chocolate pudding, sausage, bacon, strawberries and orange juice.
After breakfast we got ready for the day and at 9 a.m. went to the elementary school to meet Courtney's new teacher. She is really nice and Courtney is excited to be in Mrs. Murphy's class. We also ran by Ethan's classroom to talk to his teacher. She will be great too!
Then we went to the Gubler Splash Pad for Courtney's friend birthday party. She had invited 4 girls and 3 boys but one boy couldn't make it. They played in the water for a while and then, when they all got cold, we played some games with balloons. They had to see who could keep the balloon in the air the longest. They also had to put the balloon between their legs and walk to a tree and back (Courtney got smart on the second round and hopped.) Then we played a few games with water balloons.
When they got tired of games Courtney opened her presents and they had cupcakes. We then gave them their waterguns and they spent the rest of the party shooting water at each other. It was fun and I think all the kids enjoyed themselves.

Jeopardy Tattling
Courtney has figured out a new way to tattle which I call "Jeopardy Tattling.
Ethan and Courtney both know that they aren't supposed to eat in the TV room. I made Ethan a sandwich and then turned around to get Courtney's rood ready. Ethan promptly took his sandwich into the TV room to eat. I wasn't paying attention so I didn't know he had gone in there. Courtney got up from the table, went into the TV room to verify that her brother was doing something he shouldn't be, then came back in the kitchen and asked, "Mom, is Ethan supposed to be eating in the TV room?"
I went and talked to Ethan to get him out and then I asked Courtney if she was supposed to be tattling. She said, "I didn't tattle Mom. I asked you a question. [A question she already knew the answer to.] If I were going to tattle I would tell you that he was in there, not ask you."
It's scary how her mind works.

Who?!?!
Ethan loves this movie called "Looney Toones, Back in Action." We borrowed it from the library and he laughs and laughs. Tonight at dinner Bryan asked Ethan who his favorite character was. He thought about it and said, "The duck and the rabbit."
WHAT?!?!?! You mean Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck?!?!
Poor kid needs a better Looney Toones education!

It Came Out!!
Courtney has been DYING to have her tooth fall out. She wiggled it all the time and the tooth under it broke through the skin, but still the tooth hung on. Ethan loves to pull teeth. He pulls all his own teeth and has been trying to help Courtney get her tooth pulled. A couple of times he has tried to get it out but it wouldn't come.
Tonight, after FHE and treats, Courtney had enough of her wiggly tooth. Ethan got a piece of gauze, Courtney sat on his bed, and he began in earnest to get her tooth out. He pushed it one way and it started bleeding. He pushed it another way and it bled some more. Courtney said it didn't hurt at all. Ethan bunched up the gauze one more time, put his fingers around her tooth, pulled and...POP (really, it sounded like a "pop" and was pretty gross!)...out it came.
Courtney was so excited!! She said it didn't hurt at all and Ethan was so proud of himself. Again, I think he should become a doctor because he loves doing stuff like that and it doesn't make him queasy.
Courtney and I immediately went downstairs to make her a tooth bag so the tooth doesn't get lost and the Tooth Fairy can find it easier. She is so excited!! Finally, she lost a tooth!!

Temple Pictures
Ethan wanted to do something nice for Courtney for her birthday and came up with this:

After Church today, Ethan and I went to the St. George Temple and I let him take pictures to his heart content...which was about 10 minutes and then we went to the Visitor's Center to watch some movies. But I think he got some great shots. He now wants to sell it on Craigslist. ;) We are going to have this printed at Costco (cheap!) and get a frame so he can give it to her on her birthday. I thought it was very sweet of him to think of this.

Time Out!
What gets you a time out in our house? When you spill juice and your mom asks you to clean it up and you say (while throwing a fit and rolling your eyes), "Sheesh, chill Mom!" you get a time out.
Yup. Automatic time out. She didn't see the light of day for a while on that one. Bryan and I had a good laugh after she was gone but I wanted to nip that one in the bud!

Gods and Heroes Camp
We signed Ethan up for a Gods and Heroes Camp. It was all about the Greek gods, which worked really well with the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series of books that Ethan loves. Ethan and his good friend, Cody, spent 4 days at the St. George Art Museum making their costumes, painting things and learning all about the Greek culture and the ancient gods. They loved it.
On the last day parents were invited to show up and take pictures of them. Ethan was Ares, the god of war. Next year they are doing the Roman gods and both Ethan and Courtney want to do it again. I think he learned a lot!

The Dentist Is In
Courtney has had a loose tooth (her very first one!) for about a month now and it is driving her CRAZY! Ethan loves to pull teeth so he has offered to pull her tooth for her. He tried about 3 weeks ago but it hurt her so he stopped. Last night he decided to try again.
Courtney had him get a tissue and she sat in the "dentist chair" and he began pulling. He worked on it for a few minutes but couldn't get it to come out. Courtney tried to get it out but she couldn't either.
I was grossed out and couldn't watch! I guess we'll just have to wait for it to come out the NORMAL way...without brotherly intervention!

Teachers!
The biggest stress of every summer is the day we find out who the kids have as a teacher for the upcoming year. When Ethan was in kindergarten, on the second to last day of school, the kids would go into their new teacher's classroom so they could meet him/her. It was great because they knew at the beginning of summer who it was and had time to get used to the idea. It didn't work out too well when the teacher switched schools during the summer and the kids showed up to a classroom with a new teacher. So last year it was decided to announce the teacher the week before school began. And it worked that way this year too.
I went to the elementary school this afternoon without the kids, just in case, and they gave me a paper to guide me through the school. There were signups for Community Council, choir, drum corp. etc. and places to pay for school lunch, PTA, t-shirts, yearbooks, etc. I went late so it wasn't too busy. Then I got to the table with the teacher assignments. I knew both teachers so they quickly looked up Courtney and she got...Mrs. Murphy! Then they looked up Ethan and he got...Mrs. Belliston! I have to say that we scored in the teacher department, although all the teachers are really good at the school (especially in 1st grade).
I really didn't have a preference for Courtney's teacher because they are all really good. The teacher Ethan had for 1st grade isn't at the school any more so we couldn't get her, but I have been impressed with all three teachers. So we are pretty happy and Courtney loves it because one of her teacher's favorite foods is mashed potatoes...Courtney's favorite too!!
I was nervous about Ethan's teacher though. They are all good teachers but there was one that didn't fit his personality as well as the others and Ethan was nervous/afraid he would get that teacher. The teacher who gave me the kid's teacher assignments handed it to me and said, "He has the best teacher of all!" It was her! And she was the teacher that Ethan wanted to get. She said that she was really excited to have him because she had heard great things about him. She said that he is going to have a great year with her and she can't wait to get to know him better.
When I came home and told Ethan he was super excited. We know of one other friend who is going to be in his class, so that will be good.
Yeah for the new school year!!!

Best Glass Cleaner
I cleaned the insides of our windows the other day and was so proud of myself. It took hours and I was happy to have accomplished it. When the sun hit them the next morning I could have cried. They were so streaky and horrible!!
I did an internet search on homemade cleaners to try and find one I liked. I have used a bunch before and none have been that great. I found a really odd formula (at least I thought so) and decided to try it. It worked GREAT!!! So I thought I would share.
Glass Cleaner:
2 cups warm water
1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
1/4 cup white vinegar
1 Tbsp. corn starch (yup, that's right!)
Put all ingredients in a spray bottle and shake to mix (make sure the nozzle is closed). You will have to shake it up once-in-a-while so the corn starch doesn't settle at the bottom but it works great.
I just wanted to share my happiness!
