New school pics

Here are the kids 2018-2019 school pics:

Cute kids!

She lost a tooth!

Courtney's teeth don't come out easily and they usually hurt her for a long time before they finally give up the ghost and die.  So I was shocked when she came out of the bathroom the other day with a tooth in her hand.  One of her molars was loose and bugging her, so she pulled it out.

She is getting closer and closer to being able to get braces.

MECH 1000

Ethan has a mechanical engineering class at the college and he is really enjoying it.  He brought a project home the other day and it was so cool.  He used the 3-D printer to print a vase that he designed.

He has printed a keychain and a bridge also.  It's a fun class!

He's famous!

We have been trying to get the word out about how cool mountain biking is on the high school level for a while and this season it has worked!  I got a text from a guy in our ward saying to check out the St. George News website under the sports section.  I did and found this:

St. George News

Yup, Ethan was on the front cover of the website!  The story was all about the Moab race with pictures and everything.  It was really fun.

With the way the fall sports are going at SCHS, it's a good thing the mountain bike team is giving them something to look forward to. ;)

Arches and the drive home

We were so close, the kids hadn't been, we hadn't been for 20 years, and we had a National Parks Pass, so we decided to visit Arches National Park on our way home.  The line was long but not as long as Zion so we figured it was worth it.  The kids had fun although we didn't do any hikes and we really just drove through.  But everyone was tired and ready to go home.

The drive home was long but uneventful, thankfully.  They really need to get a radio station between Richfield and Moab.  That's a long stretch with nothing if you haven't downloaded anything or have CDs to play!

This is how the kids spent their time:

Moab mountain bike race

Ethan had his 3rd mountain bike race in Moab on the 22nd.  This is a fun course and one that he likes to ride, so he was looking forward to it.  Grandma and Grandpa Pack were coming as were Julie, Brooke, Luke and Zach, so we were excited to see everyone.

We got to Moab and I dropped everyone off for the pre-ride.  Courtney wanted to try the pre-ride and this was a good one for her to start with so we took an extra bike for her to ride on.  I wasn't sure if she would be able to handle it because she didn't like mountain biking the last time she tried it, but we were willing to let her try it again.

I went to the campground where we were staying (Pack Creek Campground, fun huh?) to check in and get the all-important bathroom keys.  It was a nice location but took me 45 minutes to get there following their directions.  When I checked in, I asked if there was a faster way to get back to the venue and they gave me directions that only took 15 minutes, as opposed to the 45 it took to get there.  I was glad I had asked!

When I got checked in and saw where we would be setting up camp, I went back to the venue to pick up the riders.  Ethan was back but Courtney and Bryan were still out riding.  I was a bit nervous but when I saw Courtney I knew nothing was wrong.  She had a blast on the pre-ride and did really well.  She did better than the freshmen girls we have and was a threat to a little Carbon Jr. Devo rider that was determined a girl wasn't going to beat him!  I think that may be a new motivator for some riders.  Make the rides co-ed and then the boys will work harder so a girl won't pass them! ;)

We loaded up and met Grandma, Grandpa and Julie's family at Zax for dinner.  It was a pizza buffet place that I had been told is the best place to eat before a race.  Ethan has a tradition of eating pizza before a race and he tends to eat a lot of pizza before a race.  The food was ok but it wasn't what they had said it would be.  Most of the team was there also so it was fun to see everyone.

Moab wasn't as crowded this year as it was last year, so that was awesome.

After dinner, Courtney went with Grandma and Grandpa to swim at their hotel pool while we went to set up camp.  We had the tent up when our neighbor mentioned that we had a campsite down in the trees that was shaded and by the creek.  We didn't know that!  So we moved our tent down there.  Ethan and I showered and went to bed while Bryan went to pick up Courtney.

Saturday morning I had to get Bryan out to the venue early so he could be there for his volunteer spot.  He was a sweep for an early race so he would be able to watch Ethan.  After I dropped him off, I dropped Courtney off with Grandma so she could have some "grandma time" while we were at the race.  Then I went to buy ice and get some other things ready.

Ethan was up when I got back to camp so we ate breakfast and went to the venue.  It is a fun place to be when you are around mountain bikers.  Everyone is so nice and it's just a fun atmosphere.  Ethan got his stuff ready and we sat in the shade of our pop up to watch the racers.

They did something new at this race, they had a controlled start.  That's where they have a race official pace the group at the beginning, kind of like you see in Nascar.  I hadn't seen a controlled start before and it was fascinating but brings up a few interesting points.  You are going for the best time and your time starts when the first racer crosses the starting line.  If the pacer is faster for your wave than for the wave before you (or slower for that matter) it messes up the time.  And, the last person in the pack gets added time when they aren't really racing but they are waiting to go through the start gate.  Seems a bit unfair to me. Oh well.

The varsity race is always awesome to watch and you could see the dust fly when the pacer would pull off and let the race start.  It wasn't as dusty as Richfield but it was still dusty.

All the family got there in time to see Ethan start.  He was the first in his wave so it was cool to watch him lead the group down in the controlled start.

Courtney had the camera and she got some awesome shots of Ethan riding.

The start was a bit weird.  They came out of the start gate, turned right, went down a road a bit, turned left, went down a road a bit, and then the pacer pulled off and they went for it.

After a while, I'm not sure distances, they turned left and hooked into the trail right before the finish line.  So after the start, we went to our pop up and were able to see Ethan go by as he was on the first part of his first lap.  He was still enjoying it and you can tell from his smile!

Then the waiting began.  Bryan could follow him with his binoculars, which was fun and also gave us a heads up as to when he would be coming by.  He was still looking good as he started the 2nd lap.  This race was only 2 laps and he was grateful for that!

When it had been enough time, and Bryan had seen Ethan drop down to where he was getting close to finishing, we went to the finish line to cheer him on.  He pushed it at the end and did great!

Ethan was tired afterward but he wasn't dying like he was after Richfield.  It was fun to watch him race and he got to visit with family for a bit before they left.

Ethan and Grandpa got some time to chat one-on-one and it was so cool.

We waited around for podiums and, once again, Snow Canyon High won 1st place!  It was a bit scary for a while and we weren't sure if the other teams would pull it off, but the riders did a great job!

Male model

Ethan has been getting harassed at Church because he doesn't have a suit coat.  Not really, there's just peer pressure to wear one so he asked if we could get him one.  I spent all day studying up on sales and how to fit a suit coat correctly.  I had pages of notes and had found sales in our area for suits.  So I took Ethan over to Kohl's with me to see if we could find something.

I should have known that nothing would fit when I took his measurements.  Usually, when measuring for a suit coat, you measure the chest, subtract 5 or 7 inches from that measurement and you have the waist for the pants.  Ethan is the SAME MEASUREMENT for his chest as for his waist.  I knew I was in trouble.  We tried on the jacket I thought would be his size and then checked for fit.

The jacket should have 1/2 inch between the top button and your stomach.  Ethan had at least 6 inches.  The sleeve should stop between your wrist and the top joint of your thumb.  Ethan had at least 3 inches before it even got to his wrists.  And the jacket should sit (at the back) at the bottom of your bum cheeks where your legs begin.  Ethan's barely reached the top of his bum.  And the suit coat (at the side) should reach the bottom of your fingertips.  Ethan had a whole hand before it would reach the bottom.

After laughing and taking this picture, where he is modeling the jacket the same way the guy in the ad was...

he tried on a "L" size because the sleeves and jacket length are supposed to be longer.  Nope, didn't work.  And they didn't have an "XL" that we could try, although I'm sure that wouldn't have helped because he is too skinny for those.

Meanwhile, I am trying to seriously find him a jacket and Ethan is finding the most obnoxious pink tie in the store to put on over his shirt.  When I had another jacket for him to try on, he had the tie tied around his neck (nicely, by the way) and then we put on the jacket.  We were laughing so hard.  I was about to take a picture when another kid and his mom came around the corner and Ethan quickly, but cooly, took off the tie so he wouldn't look goofy.

Now, we have to take him to a specialty store to have him fitting for a suit because it's obvious that we won't be able to find one off the rack for him.  But it was so much fun looking!

Shop Class

Courtney is enjoying shop class.  She has certified on all the machines so she can start making things.  She made a keychain and a cutting board.  She has a lot of fun with the class.

Soccer Game

Courtney had a soccer game last night at Little Valley and they WON!  They have been doing well.  They are 2-1-1 so far this season.

We had to divide and conquer the other day, so Bryan and Ethan went to mountain biking while I took Courtney to soccer.  It was pretty warm so we took plenty of water.

Running laps to warm up in 95-degree weather. (Courtney is under the black pole in the middle of the pic.)

The coach started Courtney at forward but she hadn't ever played that before so she wasn't sure what to do.  He pulled her after a while and put her back at midfield.  She did a great job at that position and had a great game.

Here she is in her United uniform.  Her back is to the camera and she is in black shorts.

Richfield Race

On September 8th, Ethan had his second mountain bike race in Richfield.  We went on Friday so he could pre-ride the course.  It was really dusty and hot.  The coaches had a meeting after most had finished the pre-ride and gave the riders some tips as to how to ride the course.

When they finished, Bryan set up our popup shade tent next to the track so we would have a shaded area to sit while watching the race. We left our chairs there also so we wouldn't have too much to haul to the pit zone the next morning.  Then we went to find our hotel in Richfield.  We had made a reservation because there were going to be a lot of riders in town and we didn't want to chance it.  But it was a dive of a motel. It was cheap, so we got what we paid for. ;)

We had the usual dinner of pizza and then went to bed.

Saturday morning we took our time getting up and eating breakfast.  We all had our team shirts on and Ethan made the comment that we look weird all matching.  But we knew once we got to the venue it would all make sense and not look weird.  Then we made our way to the race venue.  When we were driving up, you could see a huge cloud of dust above the track.  It was crazy.

We hauled all our stuff to the pit zone and the shade tent that we had left up the night before.

Bryan was a roaving course marshall so he checked in and was on his bike to help out if they needed it.  He had a lot of kids that got heat stroke.  He also helped a kid that had a concussion.  It was a crazy busy race for Bryan...and then his tire popped.  Rough day.

We had a while before it was time for Ethan's race so the other of us sat and watched the other races.  The Varsity race is fun to watch because it is so fast!  When it was time for Ethan's race he got ready and warmed up.  Courtney and I went to the start line to watch Ethan take off with his group.

Ethan knows that I want to see a smile before he takes off and I got one!  They had a girl break her arm in the race before Ethan's, so it set everything back by 20 minutes.  That meant that the boys were ready to go and had to wait.

Here is the start of his race:

When he had taken off, Courtney and I went back to our shade tent to sit and wait for Ethan to ride by.  It was a long race (5.7 miles per lap) and Ethan had 3 laps to do, so we knew we would be waiting for a while.

Here's Ethan as he went by us:

Ethan was exhausted when he finished his 3 laps! This is him as he went into the finish:

Can you tell that it was dusty?  His glasses had sweat on them that attracted dust so he couldn't really see.  And he had dust in his eyes so his left one was shut most of the race.  It was pretty crazy but he did a great job and I am so proud that he is doing this!

And....Snow Canyon High won 1st place in their division again!!  Ethan is the second from the right who is squatting.

Great job Snow Canyon!!  (Ethan is right on top in the middle)

DinoEthan

I took Ethan to the store with me and he found his Halloween costume. He is DinoEthan!  I think it looks good.

Emery County

Courtney and I went to Castle Dale for my Oman Family Reunion ("Not a Funeral Oman Family Reunion") on September 1st.  The sky and clouds were cool so we had to take a pic.  It was fun to see everyone who showed up and hear all the stories about the crazy family when they were younger.  My dad and Uncle Eldon are the last 2 siblings but everyone was represented.

Just a side note that I found out.  The scene in the newer Star Trek when the planet Volcan was blown up was filmed in Ferron!  Crazy!!

Water Party

We had the annual Stake YW/YM combined water party.  It was the perfect day because it was overcast and not too hot.  The kids had a blast playing with water guns, sliding on a huge tarp, and playing dodgeball.  The Stake YM did a great job.

The Stake YW were in charge of treats and we thought that 150 would be plenty but we ran out of ice cream and soda.  We had rootbeer floats.  We will know for next time.

The priests/laurels in our ward decided to do something else, so they went to the Lava Tubes in Snow Canyon State Park to play night games.  That's ok.  This activity is more geared toward the younger kids anyway.

Courtney had fun!  She is in the red in the middle of the pic.

Courtney's Uniform

It has her name on it!  So cool!!  She has a white jersey too but this is the colorful one.

Bike Race #1 - Kamas

Ethan had his first mountain bike race of the season in Kamas on August 25th.  We drove up on Friday after his classes so he could pre-ride the course.  It was the same course as last year but he didn't get to race it last year because it snowed!  This year it was perfect weather!

We are in the South Region, which is new this year.  It means that there were a lot less teams that last year and the pit zones weren't as crowded.  Our pit zone was right next to a little pond and was all grassy and shaded with trees.  This is NOT how any other race pit zones are, so we had to try not to be spoiled.  I don't think they wanted anyone swimming in the pond.

We stayed in a hotel in Park City for the night, had our usual dinner of pizza, and watched documentaries about aliens.  Don't knock it, it's tradition for the first race!  We had a little confusion about our hotel but we got it figured out, thanks for Bryan and his patience.

Saturday morning we woke up and got to Kamas so we could watch the other races and so Bryan could sweep the girls race.

Here is Ethan's race plate for this year!

Bryan had to be there a bit early to check in as a sweep.  That means that he rides behind the very slowest girl in the race to make sure that she is okay and nothing happens.  This race was different because Bryan's tire got a slash in the side.  It was tubeless, but he had tubes, so he hurried and changed his tire.  When he radioed in that he had to change his tire he thought he had lost the girl in front of him.  But after getting on his bike and riding a little way, there she was.  So he didn't really lose her after all.  She was enjoying her day out for a ride, which is awesome!

Ethan was a bit annoyed because his race wasn't until the afternoon so it took forever for it to come time for him to get ready.  But he sat and enjoyed the nice weather before getting his kit on.  I like their new kits, although the kids would have preferred to have them in pink!

When it was finally ready to get "race ready" the JV team was ready to go.  First they have "power pose" where they get a pep talk and say things like "I'm awesome" to themselves.  Then they grab their bikes and go warm up so they are ready to go when their heat is called.

Ethan did great.  He looked strong and was riding well.  The JV were doing three laps but after two laps they pulled a bunch of the riders because they had another heat going and they didn't want too many riders on the trail at once.  Ethan got pulled and I was nervous that he would be upset, but he was fine with doing two laps instead of three.

His legs looked pretty filthy when he finished.  He changed out of his kit and then we sat around and rested until it was time to take down the pit zone and get ready for the podiums.

We take a wagon and a cooler to each race so we can carry out stuff and have lunch to eat.  The boys got everything to the van before podiums were ready to begin.

SCHS has some great riders and we ended up with first place as a team!!  Ethan is on the very top in the middle with his arms up.  He climbed right up on the podum and the team gathered all around.  It was so neat to see them all up there.

Here is the team after podiums.  Not everyone stayed because it didn't start until close to 7 pm and we had a long drive home, but it was fun to be there.  We haven't ever stayed before and I was really glad that we did this time.

Our awesome mountain bike rider!

When we got home, we made sure that everyone knew that SCHS had taken first.  The mountain bike teams really don't get the recognition that the other teams do, but they are the only Fall sport doing well right now.

Mechanical Engineering

Ethan was given the option of taking an additional class through Success Academy this semester.  It is the Mechanical Engineering 1000 class and the lab that is 1050.  They only accepted 20 kids into the class and Ethan was able to get in (I think they took everyone who wanted to take the class).  They are with regular college students so it's a mixed class.

Dixie State University just got approval to offer a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and they are trying to get students interested in it.  What better way than to get the high school Success kids in the class?!  Ethan has been loving it!

In his first lab, he made a keychain with the 3D printer.

Bike on the CRX

If you are wondering how to hook a bike rack to the back of the CRX, this is how:

I had to hook it through the sunroof because the trunk doesn't have a big enough crack to hook it through.  But it worked!  It's a pain though because the motor for the sunroof if shot, so I have to manually crank the roof open and shut and it was raining.  But I got the bike to the shop for the tune-up without too much trouble....except somehow rain got down into the seatbelt mechanism and soaked the seatbelt. I didn't notice until I adjusted the seatbelt halfway to the bike shop and realized that I had a strip of wet across my chest from the seatbelt.  I was a bit embarrassed and strategically held my purse close to my chest when I had to get out and go inside the bike shop but it finally dried and now I know to be careful after it rains!

United FC

Courtney had her first game as a United FC player.  They played a team in Enoch so we had to drive past Cedar City to get the soccer field.  The team didn't have their new uniforms yet so they had them wear their gray practice jerseys then wrote WITH SHARPIE their numbers on the back. I wasn't very happy about that one because they ruined their shirts!  Her number #22 was taken by another girl who was already on the team so Courtney had to choose another number.  She wanted one that no one else would take so she is now #99.

They won the game and the team looked really good!
